One of my all time favorite groups has to be the
Butthole Surfers. I saw them live MANY times in the 80's & early 90's, and they
never failed to be the ultimate in over the top experiences. As I'm writing
this, I'm going to see them for the first time in over 10 years tomorrow night
(7/28/08) at the Stone Church in New Hampshire, and I'm REALLY excited!!!
The Buttholes were graduates of the Flipper school of grunge, but took the whole
genre into the psychedelic nether regions. I remember one show where Gibby was
PISSED because noone was clapping at the end of the show. I don't think he
realized how overpowered we all were...I for one couldn't even talk right for a
few hours...The show was a complete assault on the senses, with a multilayered
visual & sound experience that was unlike anyone before or since.
I am also a big fan of their recorded output, and have been amassing their
records for years. SO, I figured in honor of the tour, I'd mix a CD's worth of
some of my favorite songs. I put a song from each of their officially released
albums, and I put a bunch of rarer tracks that are great, but haven't been heard
as often as the official tracks. No narration by yours truly...I'm just letting
the music do the talking :) Enjoy the show, and drop me a line at
quispquake@quispquake.info if you have any comments about the show...

From the LP: Psychic Powerless-Another Man's Sac |
| Starting off the show, is the 'classic' "Cowboy Bob" from their Psychic Powerless album (their first full length album). An intense, driving song that's always been one of my favorites...featuring lots of Paul Leary screams (always a plus with me!). | |

From the LP: Hairway to Steven |
| When Hairway to Steven came out, I had no idea what the song titles were, as the album only had little drawings to tell you what the titles were...I never did find out until the Double Live album came out. An album that I didn't care for at first, and then I heard it on CD...there are SO MANY LEVELS to this album, and the LP sort of 'flattened' it out. I love the album now, and hope you enjoy 'Ricky'. | |
|
From the 1988 Peel Sessions |
| This is one of my top Butthole Surfer tracks. EDG, later released as 'Edgar' on Independent Worm Saloon. I liked this version a LOT better...the dual drum sounds catapult this one. I'm a big fan of their psychedelic mantra songs, and this is one of their best. | |
|
From the LP: Rembrandt Pussyhorse |
| 'Perry' is their extremely dark version of the Perry Mason theme (at least that's what I've heard...I can barely hear it!). A twisted song from a VERY twisted album...Rembrandt Pussyhorse is the first Buttholes album I bought, and is still as powerful now as it was the first time I heard it. | |
|
From the Compilation LP: Smack My Crack |
| Giorno Poetry Systems put out quite a few albums in the 80's compiling underground artists doing their thing. The Buttholes were featured on "Smack My Crack" doing a song that had to be taken from a dream...very trippy imagery on this great song. | |

From the Bonus 5" That Came With Original Blind Eyes See All Videos |
| When the original version of the "Blind Eyes See All" video came out on VHS, the first 500 had a clear 5" record with an early mix of "American Woman". I had missed getting this, and than a friend later gave me a copy of the coveted record. This is a bit crunchy at times, but it's a very cool mix of this!!! | |
|
From the EP: Widowermaker |
| My honest opinion of the "Widowermaker" EP that came out was...well, not so great...I think they were trying to redefine themselves, and were only partially successful. HOWEVER, I LOVED this track "The Bong Song", another great example of their psychedelic mantra attack. | |
|
From the BRITISH VERSION of the Pepper EP |
| I had completely missed this one "Hybrid", until my friend Carl turned me onto it. I wasn't a big "Pepper" fan, so never bought the EP. Carl played it for me, and I was absolutely floored...as far as I know this was only released on the English version of the Pepper EP, and was WELL WORTH the Ebay bucks dropped to get it. | |
|
From the LP: Humpty Dumpty LSD |
| Another release that caught me by surprise..."Humpty Dumpty LSD" was put out by the Buttholes themselves, and is a GREAT little release. Featuring rare tracks and outtakes, every fan needs a copy!!! This track was originally released on a punk compilation called the "Peace" compilation that came out in the mid-80's and didn't sound like ANYTHING else on the album. Also, this version was the full version, and I don't know if the full version was released before Humpty. Enjoy!!! | |
|
From the EP: Cream Corn From the Socket of Davis |
| "To Parter" is a classic Butthole Surfers song, and for good reason. Even on record the song totally kicks ass...Live, it's always a highlight of the show. I'm a little slow, so I didn't realize at first that the title was a pun as the song has two parts to it...duhh...This is from their "Cream Corn From the Socket of Davis" EP, (and I really wish the original cover featuring corn coming out of Sammy Davis's eye socket had come out!!! | |
|
From the LP: Brown & Out (Boot) |
| I just found this boot last year "Brown and Out". It features unreleased tracks and demos from their earliest times...much of this came out on the "Brown Reason to Live" & "Live PCPPEP" releases. This demo rocks like crazy, and was later officially released on the "Psychic Powerless" album. | |
|
From the EP: Live PCPPEP |
| And speaking of "Live PCPPEP", here's the live version of the song "Hey" (originally released on the "Brown Reason to Live" EP). I always liked this track, and once again, it benefits GREATLY by the dual drum sound. Some people didn't think the Buttholes should have released this EP, as it pretty much mirrored "Brown Reason", but I think the dual drumming alone was reason to release it. | |
|
From the LP: Independent Worm Saloon |
| From the John Paul Jones produced MAJOR LABEL "Independent Worm Saloon" comes a completely rocking track that STILL sounds great when driving down the road...One of my favorite of their latter day tracks. A lot of folks didn't like this album, and it IS kind of spotty, but the good tracks are REALLY good. Listen to it again...I did recently, and was pleasantly surprised. | |
|
From the LP: The Hole Truth & Nothing Butt |
| "The Hole Truth and Nothing Butt" was a bootleg that the Buttholes got ahold of and released themselves. Full of awesome live tracks with good sound...this version of their MASTERPIECE "Psychedelic Jam" is as good as sound gets...I don't think it's possible to play this loud enough...the Jam was always the highlight of their live show for me, and this version captured it...oh yes it did... | |
|
Outtakes From the 1988 Peel Sessions |
| Last year, I found a posting by someone that had a few outtakes from the Peel Sessions the Buttholes did for John Peel. Obviously in front of an audience, there were some great outtakes, including this one, their version of Chrome's "TV as Eyes/Chromosome Damage". I LOVE Chrome, so it was a serious kick to find the Buttholes paying tribute. | |
|
From the 1988 Peel Session |
| Another one from the Peel Sessions themselves, this was an earlier two drummer take on "Blindman". I prefer this to the later version on the "Pioughd" album (the one Buttholes release I rarely listen to). Enjoy the sonic attack!!! | |
|
From the LP: Locust Abortion Technician |
| And finally, there is just no other way to end up a Buttholes tribute than featuring a song from their pinnacle "Locust Abortion Technician". "22 Going on 23" is simply one of the heaviest, most fucked up things I've ever heard. From some lady baring her soul on the radio, to cows mooing, samples of"Anxiety"..."Depression", and some of Paul Leary's best guitar ever...A super way to end the show. | |
So, thanks a lot for checking out the show! I hope you enjoy it...if you're a fan, there may have been other songs you prefer, but I think this was a pretty good sample of some good Butthole Surfers tunes. Enjoy!!!
