QuispQuake Radio Show #3 Posted 2-28-10

First show posted in awhile...I've been ALL OVER THE PLACE in my music tastes lately, so that's what you get with this one!!! From weird electronic music to psych, from garage/rock to fun noise...it's all here :)  I've noticed (looking over the playlist) a lot of influences from music blogs, and I'll link to them so that you can discover some other hidden treasures.

All songs have descriptions and links to more information on the artist/track.  Click on the cover image for the main sites of the artists if I could find them.

Feel free to drop a comment to quispquake@quispquake.info if you have anything to add.  Enjoy, and hopefully it won't be too long before my next show post!!!

Luddites-Altered States
From the EP: Altered States (1984)
I first heard of this band on Henry Rollins GREAT radio show (check it out HERE).  Cool, post punk experimental sounds...this single really blew me away, and it's in my current heavy rotation.  Seems the band only had two singles released, which is too bad...both are great, and I wish there was more by them.  The Life On the Dot blog has both singles posted with some info if you're interested in hearing more.

Eno with the Winkies
From the February 26, 1974 John Peel Session
Man, I have been on a MAJOR Eno kick for the past few months (and really, is that a bad thing???).   In 1973-74, Eno put together a band for touring, and they did a Peel Session (which has the only recorded output of Eno & the Winkies).  Supposedly Eno had some health problems which kept the band from continuing...if you want more info, check out the Punk Not Profit blog.

  Gerry & the Holograms-Gerry Hologram
From the EP: Meet the Dissidents  (1979 Absurd Records
I really don't know why, but I love this track.  It's a VERY minimal song, but once it got in my head, it never left.  I first heard this on the amazing Arts for Spastics blog (the BEST in mostly recent cool freaky sounds).  I actually saw this come up on Ebay awhile back, but I'm too cheap to spend THAT much money on a single...BUT, the good folks at the Last Days of Man On Earth blog were nice enough to post the single.

Novak-Oh Farrah!
From the 7": Oh Farrah! (1977 Dumb Records)
Another great score from the Last Days of Man on Earth blog.  Novak, the artist who created this amazingly...yes, DUMB single was an early member of the LA punk scene (he produced Crime, the Nuns, and others).  Check out the aforementioned blog for an incredible interview with Novak.

Wooden Shjips-Motorbike
From the LP:  Dos (2009 Holy Mountain Records)
Appearing at this year's All Tomorrow's Parties festival in New York (and YES I'M GOING!!!), is one of my favorite bands of the past few years Wooden Shjips.  They have a great droney psych sound that grooves you, yet rocks you too (a damned good combination methinks!).  They have a couple of albums out now (Dos is their 2nd full length) and they are both work picking up.

Sleep-The Druid
From the LP: Holy Mountain (1992 Earache Records)
Another band appearing at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival.  Sleep will be playing this album "Holy Mountain" in it's entirety the first night.  I hadn't heard it, and had to get it when I saw they were playing.  Holy cow...this out Sabbath's Sabbath.  A GREAT album, and I couldn't be more excited to see them play it!!!  This album has just been reissued so, go and grab yourself a copy!!!

They Never Sleep-Just For You
From the CD: Mother Nature Sings Her Lullabye (2009 Self Released
From the ashes of the God Bullies & Thrall, They Never Sleep arise!  It's so good to see one of my all time favorite bands (the God Bullies) reincarnate, and then come out with a release as strong as this one...Mother Nature Sings Her Lullabye is a GREAT album...Definitely pick it up soon, as they only made 1000 copies...

Kim Fowley-I'm Bad
From the LP: I'm Bad (1972 Capitol Records)
I find it just awesome that Kim Fowley is still living strong and still a force!  He has an amazing website, but for me, I love that I get to hear him every weekend on the Sirius Underground Garage Channel...his stories, and his outlook on life never fail to inspire me.  I found this a few weeks ago at a thrift store, and it's been on my turntable pretty much constantly.  Enjoy "I'm Bad".

Brogues-Don't Shoot Me Down
From the EP The Brogues (1999 Sundazed Records
With us getting Sirius last year, the aforementioned Underground Garage has been played a LOT, and I've been right back into Garage Rock rather heavily...I picked this EP up a couple of weeks ago, and although it's not solid, I absolutely love "Don't Shoot Me Down".

Chesterfield Kings-Up & Down
From the LP: Psychedelic Sunrise (2008 Wicked Cool Records
Probably my most played track of the last year or so...this just rocks so freaking much.  It's cool that the Chesterfield Kings have been around more than 20 years, but still come out with tracks this heavy...Yowsa....Check out the Wicked Cool Records website for this, and other awesome stuff...

King Khan & the Shrines-Land of the Freak
From the LP: Supreme Genius of King Khan & the Shrines   (2009 Vice Records)
Rounding out the Garage Rock section of the show, is a GREAT over the top song by King Khan & the Shrines.  King Khan really takes the rock and roll thang to a whole new level.  If you like this, check out this album, and the What Is album.

The Shocking Blue-Love Buzz
From the LP: The Shocking Blue (1970 Colossus Records
The Shocking Blue album is one of my favorite finds of the last couple of months.  I'd only heard Venus (which I always liked), but I had read in my travels that their albums were good...and yup, this one is REALLY good...My copy is kinda crunchy, but give a listen to a song later covered by Nirvana on an early single "Love Buzz".

The Fireman (Paul McCartney): Light From the Lighthouse
From the LP: Electric Arguments (2009 ATO Records)
My favorite album of last year.  This is the best thing I've heard from Sir Paul since McCartney II...a solid, progressive, MODERN album.  Every song is different, and every song is great.  I highly recommend Electric Arguments if you don't have it.

Churchills-Straight People
From the LP: The Churchills (Cherchilim) (1968
The only Israeli psychedelic band that I'm aware of.  I guess originals of this go for thousands of dollars due to the rarity, and due to the fact that it's an incredible goddamn album!!!  Go out and find yourself a reissue of the Churchills album...you'll be really glad you did!!!

Bobb Trimble-Glass Menagerie Fantasies
From the LP: Iron Curtain Innocence (1980 Bobb Records)
A cool find of the past year...Bobb Trimble put out a couple of GORGEOUS psychedelic records back 30 years or so ago...They've been reissued finally on Secretly Canadian, and they are both HIGHLY recommended...Enjoy "Glass Menagerie Fantasies".
Marissa Nadler-Loner
From the CD: Little Hell (2009 Kemado Records
One of my favorite moments of Terrastock 6 a few years back was when Marissa Nadler did her solo set when I was sitting right in front of her.  A beautiful voice and melancholy, yet gorgeous songs.  I've got all of her records, and hope you like this track from her latest album Little Hell, called Loner.

Six Organs of Admittance-Nightly Trembling Creation Aspect Fire
From the LP: RTZ (2009 Drag City Records)
My favorite guitarist bar none.  Ben Chasny of Six Organs pulls the most amazing sounds out of his guitar...This is from RTZ, a retrospective release that came out last year which finally brought a bunch of really limited stuff out again.  Highly recommended (as are all of Six Organs releases).
Huun Huur Tu-Sygyt (Lament of the Igil)
From the LP: 60 Horses In My Herd ( 1993 Shanachie Records)
I had the great honor of seeing Huun Huur Tu, a band of Tuvan Throat Singers a couple of years ago at the American Folk Festival in Bangor.  I have simply never heard anything like this!!! Multiple sounds coming out of each singer, and just BEAUTIFUL!!!  If you like this pick up some of their other stuff...

Thanks a LOT for listening to the show.  I hope you enjoyed it!!! Any comments, threats, etc., please email me at quispquake@quispquake.info (I LOVE TO GET EMAIL COMMENTS!!!).
