The Cramps
Live at the Roxy in
Boston 5/19/03
All right! The freaking CRAMPS!!! Haven't seen them in 10 years, so looking forward!
Should tell what happened...wasn't planning on going to the show, as it's over three hours to Boston, but I went to Newbury Comics (a New England based COOL record store), and entered a drawing to win tickets to the Cramps & a VIP pass to a party before it...and I WON!!! WOW! Had to go, even though couldn't find a partner in crime, so I had to go myself...and it was indeed a three hour drive...
The party was okay...free drinks & food (gimme gimme gimme!), but then it was time for the opening band, the Von Bondies. Had heard of them, but hadn't heard them...they kicked ASS HARD! Great trashy rock and roll...just what I want to hear after a coupla White Russians...Great pounding drummer, bass player was intense, and the two guitarrists kicked the sound hard...I loved their set, and got their CD "Lack of Communication" the next day (as you should too!).
Then...THE CRAMPS!!! Their new album "Fiends of Dope Island" is ROCKIN, so I had high hopes for the show, and I was NOT disappointed...the Cramps are still the finest Trash-Rockabilly band in existence!!! Ivy was playing a MEAN guitar, the bass player & drummer were on, and then there was Lux Interior. Lux (must be in his mid-50's by now!) has not slowed down! He was crawling on the speaker cabinets, and all over the place...he's always been my favorite front man, and didn't disappoint tonight. A great set of new songs, as well as old classics like 'Garbageman' 'New Kind of Kick' and 'Surfin' Bird'. Yay!
I was told Lux & Ivy were gonna come out and hang about a half hour after the show, but as it was midnite already, I had to go...three hours later I was home, deaf, but happy!!!
